A HANDS-ON COURSE:
Groundwater Risk Assessment For Landfill Design and Performance
Appraisal
Groundwater Remediation and Landfill
design, performance assessment approaches used in Europe have
developed considerably over the last few years. The industry
now has access to methodologies and tools that support the
development of cost effective remedial and preventative designs
that afford robust and demonstrable environmental protection.
Computer modeling can be used as part of the design process
to optimise the engineering design for site specific groundwater
remediation and risk minimisation.
The course objective is to equip delegates
with the skills required to develop conceptual models and
use relevant approaches to risk assessment consistent with
the EU guidance for the assessment of pollution risks and
the risk of the release of List 1and 2 substances to the water
environment. The course also provides a forum for discussion
between practitioners, regulators and researchers to further
the debate on quantitative risk estimation and explore the
sensitivity of outcomes to real uncertainty in site performance
and identification of key parameters for typical leachate
determinands and pathways.
The course content includes:
- The latest European legal framework controlling
waste disposal to landfill
- Principles and best practice underpinning
current remediation and landfill design
- The principles of Groundwater risk assessment
- Hands-on studies demonstrating probabilistic
methods - representation of uncertainty and %iles of risk
- Engineered containment and leachate migration
processes
- Landfill characterisation - the development
of robust conceptual models and use of site-specific field
data
- Hands-on evaluation of risk assessments
and robustness of proposals the role of conservatism
- New directions for waste disposal
environmental protection for a sustainable future
Who should attend?
This is a practical course for everyone involved in remediation
design and regulation of waste disposal to landfill including
environment agency, County and local authority staff, consultants,
problem-owners and researchers.
